The Lions Square or Eleftheriou Venizelou Square is the heart of Heraklion city and the favorite gathering place for locals and visitors. Here, the morning tourists arriving by ferry make a stop for their breakfast, especially the local bougatsa, while waiting for the city to wake up. During the day, thousands of passersby and tourists swarm in the square with the venetian Morosini fountain. The fountain is decorated with four lions, to which the square owes its name and through the mouth of which water gushes. The square is surrounded by shops and cafés, as well as grill houses where you can taste souvlaki or gyros wrapped in pita bread. On the Square, you can also see the Basilica San Marco that hosts exhibitions and various cultural events, as well as some remains (arcs) of the once impressive Ducal Palace.
