Stop at Voutes on the main road and admire the Trigiris residence, one of the most beautiful mansions in the countryside, which was turned into a command post during the German occupation in WW2. Walk in the picturesque alleys of the village, see the now derelict factories and the wells, and afterwards go uphill to the Church of Panagia (dedicated to the Assumption of Virgin Mary)   with the beautiful view. There you can relax in the shade of the trees, but also see exhibits of folklore interest that are hosted in the exhibition hall of the parish. Relax and drink Greek coffee accompanied by sweet cherry or bergamot in one of the cafes and taste locally grown fried zucchini or eggplants in one of the taverns. Follow the path to the chapel of St. George and enjoy your food in nature, using the outdoor grill or the traditional wood-fired oven located in the courtyard. There are village festivals with traditional food, plenty of wine and live music on the eve of the Dormition of the Mother of God (August 15), on the feast of St. George  and on Pure Monday. In case you find yourself there on any of these dates, make sure not to miss them!

Gastronomy

Besides the two main products of the region, olive oil and wine, you should also try traditional cinnamon, almond or wine dunking biscuits and get traditional barley rusks or slow-fermentation sourdough bread from the village bakery. Enjoy your meal in one of the taverns and taste fried zucchini or eggplants, cultivated in the vegetable garden of the owner, accompanied by local wine.

Cottage Industry – Traditional Professions

The women of the village weave even today on a traditional loom, creating woven fabrics with love and passion. In fact, they teach young girls, keeping the traditions of the past alive. Part of the textile production is available for viewing, as well as for purchase, if you visit the exhibition hall of the parish, where, among other things, Cretan costumes are hosted.
