The Natural History Museum of Crete (NHMC) has been operating under the framework of the University of Crete and encompasses all the activities offered by a fully-featured modern museum. Nowadays, it is housed at the premises of the Old Electricity Power plant located at the coastal highway of Heraklion. The museum offers its visitors a unique experience. Its exhibition rooms, extending over a surface area of more than 3,500 sq. m. display in an impressive and innovative way the natural environment of the Eastern Mediterranean Region placing emphasis on Greece and Crete.

The exhibition is laid out in four different levels. Visitors can tour in the so-called “Megadioramas” which are realistic representations of the most important ecosystems found in the region, admire the “Deinotherium Giganteum” (Giant Deinotherium) at “Fossils Hall”, walk around the “Living Museum”, the “Erevnotopos” (Discovery Room), a place specially designed for children and the “Earthquake Simulator” (Enceladus). It offers its visitors a unique experience as they have the opportunity to experience large earthquakes and be informed about the measures to remain safe during an earthquake. The “Multimedia Room” offers visitors a variety of interactive exhibits and games, suitable both for children and adults. Moreover, the museum hosts Periodical Exhibitions as well as the Information Centre Natura Hall, a hall dedicated to the areas of Crete which are included in Natura 2000 Network.
